What is henna?

Henna is a bush that grows in dry warm climates. The leaves are harvested, dried, ground into a fine powder, and sifted multiple times. This powder is mixed into a paste using water, sugar, and essential oils. The paste is then used to create beautiful henna designs that stain the skin.

Is henna safe for everyone?

Henna North uses only 100% natural henna paste that is freshly mixed by us.

If you are pregnant, we use a special mix that only contains lavender essential oils.

Anyone with G6PD deficiency should not get henna.

Does henna come in different colors?

Natural henna is only one color. Your stain from natural henna will be a rust brown to deep chocolate color. You may see rainbow colors in some photos, but that is glitter we add as an option to your henna paste while you wear it. The glitter will come off when you scrape off your henna paste later.

You may have also seen “white henna”. These designs aren’t made with henna at all. They are crafted with paint and wipe off in a day or two.

Steer clear of BLACK HENNA! Black henna contains chemicals that can cause chemicals burns to your skin! Any time you receive henna, ask your henna artist what is in their paste and make sure it is 100% natural.

How long does henna last?

You can expect your henna stain to last 7-10 days. But, depending on where the stain is on the body, how long you left your paste on and how much washing/scrubbing that area receives, the longevity of the stain may vary.

Henna stains may be weak or not stain at all for people on certain medications and can also be affected by hormones.

How to prepare for your henna session

Schedule your appointment so you are able to relax after. You need to leave your henna paste on a minimum of four hours for the best possible stain.

Arrive with clean, lotion free skin in the area you are receiving henna. Also be mindful of the clothing you wear so your fresh henna paste isn’t rubbing on any fabric.

What to expect at your appointment

Relax in our comfortable studio. This time is just for you! We will talk about what kind of design you are interested in and a unique freehand henna design will be created just for you. After your design is complete, please be careful not to smudge the paste. It will dry in 30 minutes.

How do I care for my new henna?

You want to keep your paste on a minimum of four hours. The longer your paste stays on, the better your henna will stain! Do not allow water to touch your henna while your paste is on. Scrape off your henna paste with a fingernail or credit card. Do not use WATER to wash off the paste. Water will weaken your henna stain. The henna stain will be bright orange initially and then darken into a rich chocolate color over the next two days.

The first 24 hours after you remove your paste, avoid water, bathing, and swimming. If you do go in water, rub your stain with olive oil or coconut oil before you get it wet. It will help your henna stain last!
